Mr. Joshua Light is currently entering his 7th year as the Director of Bands at Volunteer High School.  He came to Volunteer as Assistant Director in 2002 and was promoted to head director in the Summer of 2003.  Under his direction, the band at Volunteer has consistently received superior ratings in all captions at marching contests and has received numerous invitations.  This past year the Volunteer Marching Band was the Grand Champion of the 2007 All-State Sugar Bowl Festival held in New Orleans, LA. 

Mr. Light is a graduate of Tennessee Technological University where he received his Bachelors degree in Music Education.  In his time at TTU, he played Baritone Saxophone for the Wind Ensemble, Symphony Band, Troubadours Jazz Band, and was co-founder of the Tennessee Tech Saxophone Quartet.  He was Drum-Major for the Golden Eagle Marching Band for 4 years and studied under great professors such as: Mr. Joseph Hermann, Mr. James Spinazzola, Mr. Robert Jager, Dr. Wayne Pegram, and Mr. Chris McCormick. 

Mr. Light started his teaching career working as marching and visual staff for marching bands all across Tennessee and Georgia. In 1998, Light served as marching instructor for Dobyns-Bennett High School in Kingsport, TN and marching/visual coordinator for Woodland High School in Cartersville, GA.  He remained at Dobyns-Bennett and Woodland until his graduation from college in May of 2002.    Mr. Light did his student teaching in the Spring of 2002 at Sullivan Central High School in Blountville, TN.  Mr. Light was an Assistant Director for the Dobyns-Bennett Band on it’s inaugural trip to the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA.      

Mr. Light is currently an active adjudicator and drill writer throughout the states of Tennessee, Virginia, Alabama, and North Carolina.  He is a current member of the Music Educators National Conference, Tennessee Music Educators Association, Tennessee Bandmasters Association, and East Tennessee State Band and Orchestra Association.  He is an active alumnus of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and Tennessee Tech University and former member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia fraternity.
